Kaupapa (projects with defined purpose and values) are abundant within Ngāti Wheke.

Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke works with many community groups and organizations who share the vision for a positive and sustainable future for generations to come.

With these partnerships, mātauranga Māori is inclusive, and with it a shift of focus from an ‘individual’ to ‘whānau’ source of inspiration. It gives a more holistic and inclusive view of general wellbeing, centered from an environmental perspective that stretches the expanse of the natural world.

Partnership projects with Ngāti Wheke are created from shared purpose, vision and values. This also includes hapū-led projects and initiatives.

Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour

The Whaka-ora Healthy Harbour Plan is a partnership agreement between Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, The Lyttelton Port Company, Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury & Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu that supports the monitoring and development of better ecological outcomes within Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour. It is a plan that weaves mātauranga Māori and science together to ensure the survival of our natural environment for our following generations..

Kaimahi for Nature

Kaimahi for Nature is a programme of partnership between Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Conservation Volunteers NZ, & Living Springs working on a range of sites around Whakaraupō. Its goals are focused on restoring the ngahere and mahinga kai. Key actions including raising and planting natives, predator and plant pest species control. Kaimahi for Nature is funded by Te Papa Atawhai (Dept of Conservation).

Te Ahu Pātiki

Te Ahu Pātiki is 500ha of iconic land including the summits of Te Ahu Pātiki / Mt Herbert and Mt Bradley, the two highest points in the Ōtautahi / Christchurch district. The area will become a Hinewai style conservation park protected in perpetuity with full public access and managed to enable the natural regeneration of native vegetation. Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke are proud to participate in this venture and hold representation within its guiding body.

Tangata Tiaki

Rāpaki Tangata Tiaki are working with local communities on a range of initiatives to improve the wellbeing of Whakaraupō for all recreational users. Initiatives are aimed at matters such as water quality improvement, habitat improvement for marine species, and reseeding to speed up population growth of shellfish where conditions are right. Mātaitai recognise and provide for traditional fishing through local management. They allow customary and recreational fishing but usually do not allow commercial fishing. In Whakaraupō, mataitai cover most of the harbour. The Rāpaki Mātaitai was the first ever mātaitai and was created by Rāpaki tangata tiaki in 1999.
