WHĀNAU OPPORTUNITIES

March 2023 will bring SailGP to Whakaraupō and Te Hapu o Ngati Wheke will welcome them with a Pōwhiri at Rāpaki on Wednesday 15 March. Race days take place at Te Nukutai o Tapoa Naval Point on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March.

We welcome you to join us to be part of this Pōwhiri and help showcase our culture and values to the world. There are many ways you can get involved so please register your interest.

Kaihoe

Kaihoe (waka paddlers) are needed for waka crews taking part in ceremonial hoe for the event. Crews have already started practicing so if you want to learn and celebrate our celebrate our waka traditions, register your interest now. Waka crews are needed for:

  • The official Pōwhiri at Te Rāpaki o Te Rakiwhakaputa. This will involve a ceremonial
    hoe from the beach, out into Rāpaki Bay to meet the SailGP crews and escort them to shore.
  • Sail GP Race Days @ Te Nukutai o Tapoa / Naval Point. This will involve a ceremonial paddle out onto the racecourse to start each day.

Kapa haka

Kapa haka performers needed to welcome our manuhiri, representatives and international audiences and help them experience the power and beauty of traditional kapa haka.

Kaimahi

Many different roles available; from assistance with preparation and organising leading up to and on the day of the official Pōwhiri as well as set-up of the Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke cultural site at the event itself. To register, please email rapaki@ngaitahu.iwi.nz.
